A messy gross-out horror, Drag Me to Hell proves Raimi is still on top form and provides enough laughs and a handful of genuinely scary moments to stimulate a first viewing and entice a second. The Artist is also a romance film which the academy loves and Titane is hard horror, which is probably (aside from maybe action movies) the most consistently condescended genre in Oscar history. Everything else about it is a pretty straightforward, easy-to-follow story, which Titane absolutely is not.

I also think the only thing that makes the artist "not mainstream fare" is simply the fact that it's silent.

I feel like The Artist, while definitely an interesting exercise that you don't see in typical mainstream fare, is still ultimately a nostalgic movie about movies which I think is definitely something the academy has a history of rewarding.
